First off I want to say terrific blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if
you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your
mind prior to writing. I’ve had trouble clearing my
thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I do take pleasure in writing
but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin.
Any suggestions or tips? Cheers!

I am a big advocate of using relaxation and mindfulness techniques to access the subconscious and boost your creativity. I have actually done workshops on this topic. I will often spend some time meditating, doing yoga, doing a simple relaxation exercise such as progressive muscle relaxation, or simply reading something enjoyable before writing. During those activities, I stay open to any thoughts, no matter how random, that may pop up. Then, when something does arise, I start writing on it immediately, stream of consciousness style, not editing myself at all. For me, because much of my writing and art is about being surprised and breaking free of habitual ways of thinking, this practice helps me find those absurd thoughts buried in my mind. Good luck with your writing practice!

If I write you here (as I just did) will I have to wait 10 months to get a reply? I need another poem. It’s been a few years now so I will wait however long it takes…
